A Whole Bunch of GYs

Shaking off their insipid performance against the Reds, the GYs managed a credible performance against a star-studded Portuguese side the week before. Complacency in the Portuguese team saw them lose their one goal lead to a GY team putting up one of their best performances to date.

This week it was the Red Devils that greeted GYFC at the Teck Whye stadium (secondary school). Looking sharp in their pre-match work out, initiation reactions from the GY camp were naturally apprehensive, especially after discovering the ethnicity of their opponents. An offensive plan was hence formulated while the GYs were seated on the pitch "stretching" that involved strategic silence aided by a placard and generous amounts of humour.

A scheduled early kick-off was instead off to a late start due to officiating problems. After the officiating obstacles were cleared (appeared), miraculously the over-hanging clouds disappeared along with the problems. There were no notable absences from the GYFC squad although sporadic reports of the GY phantom have been surfacing. An encouraging addition to the squad in the form of Adrian as GK lifted the spirits of Maxi Rodriguez whom majority had their money on to be the 11th man again.

Match Highlights:
The match started off with the GYs in trepidation and giving far too much credit to their opponents. But the seasoned flair of the GYs soon shined through and play was dictated by the GYs (thankfully). The defence was looking tight and stingy with their space. Centre of the pitch the midfielders were stamping their authority winning the aerial battle. Early chances fell to the GYs as Pohdolski latched on to a poor pass and nearly punished the Reds with a clever shot the went narrowly wide of the top right corner of the net.

Experience soon prevailed and Pohdolski reacted first to a shot that was parried by the Reds' custodian and this time he made no mistake with his LEFT foot. 22nd minute and 1-0 to the GYs! The crowd of 1 (uncle in yellow polo sitting by the toilet) went wild!

It wasn't before long that Pohdolski, fast becoming a crowd favourite, struck again for the GYs. A good run by XaVIN AlonHO down the flank in the 30th min followed by a low cross to the centre of the six yard box found Pohdolski who steered the ball in brilliantly with his LEFT knee. 2-0 GYFC!

A celebratory mood was in the air at half-time. Dominating the match, the GYs were busy patting each other's backs during the interval. Complacency crept in as Jingmie Carragher took over the gloves from Adrian, perhaps wanting to perform the heroics that he had accomplished the previous week. Despite the warnings that this perhaps could be the only time in 2 years of top-flight football that GYFC could manage a clean sheet, Jingmie persisted in his decision.

The second half started like the first, with the GYs firmly in control. However complacency soon crept into the ranks and the chemistry was somewhat lost to individual pursuits. A clever lob by the Devils in the 50th min had Jingmie beaten and the clean sheet lost for good. 2-1 and nerves were rattled.

A tactical decison to take Roynaldo (the fat one) and XaVIN AlonHO off on the hour mark by manager Zhi Ruiberto and pushing Neo to the flanks paid dividends when an incisive pass by Neo found Woon Rooney who put the ball past the reach of the keeper with the faintest of touches. The two goal cushion was thus restored in the 75th min.

3-1 was the final score. Credit to the GYs but many would lament the lack of a clean sheet.

Editor's pick for man of the match: Pohdolski (without a doubt).

League matches have been suspended for the coming week due to lack of managerial advice. Look out for more updates on this page.

Chief Editor's note: The Chief Editor hates all the GYs that did not contribute to this match report and sincerely hopes that he sees them in hell together with him.
